In another case of corporate brand murder, the folks at NameIntelligence are changing their whois site from whois.sc to domaintools.com.
The reasoning behind the name change seems pretty simple. While whois.sc was short and easy to type, the domaintools.com name helps show that the new site has a whole host of great domain tools.
The new site offers the same great whois.sc services (reverse ip tool, whois history, ip address lookups, etc) plus a nice array of related webmaster/domainer tools like support for more TLD extension whois lookups, pings, tracert, and a neat new feature called Nameserverspy. Name Server Spy allows to you see which nameservers (webhosts/domain parking services) are gaining and losing domains and at what rate. A neat way to keep a pulse on who’s up and coming in the industry.
In a very smart business move, NameIntelligence will be keeping the easy to use whois.sc domain name and service offering for folks like me who have become accustomed to typing whois.sc/example.com just as fast as I type example.com :)
Still not sure I’ll be forking out $1000 bucks to attend their DomainRountable conference, but I’ll definitely continue to use their site offerings!
